This is actually quite difficult to sum up succinctly without using  
IR jargon.  :(

Hopefully the Lucene scoring documentation Nathan pointed you at will  
help.  Beyond that, I think what we need is an improved and extended  
tutorial and a Cookbook.  My intention is to germinate these as HowTo  
docs on the Wiki and move the most important ones to the official  
documentation as they mature.
